The alveolate organism re-ported as a Perkinsus-like parasite in amphibians is phylogenetically distinct from Perkinsussensu stricto (a genus commonly found in mollusks; Davis et al. 2007), but both are currently placed in the class Perkinsea with other marine alveolate parasites such as Parvilucifera, which infects dinoflagellates (Hoppenrath & Leander 2009, Bråte et al. 2010).
