This article deals with science education in Finland, concentrating mainly a the situation on university level. In this introductory will give short overview of the recent political and economical developments in my country. I think this is necessary in order to understand the structure of our education system and to see its potential and future prospects. The last section lists sources for more information. Finland is located in Northern Europe, between Russia and Sweden The land area is equal to Italy or the state of Montana. The population of 5 million mainly inhabits a small south-west coastal plain. Our political and economical status is equal to the standards of other Scandinavian countries(Sweden, Denmark, Norway), though Finland has the shortest history of independency(since 1917), and we suffered greater losses in WWII than the others. Post-war international affairs in Finland were characterized by maintaining military neutrality, and Western European style market economy and democracy with a caution for not irritating"big brother" across the eastern border. Finnish politicians and the press of that time may occasionally have felt a bit uncomfortable, having to practise delicate self-censorship in order to avoid any conflict with the Soviets. But common people never felt any oppression or lack of freedom. Coke and Beatles records were sold just like anywhere else
