The need analysis resulted in a decision to use communities-of-practice to promote changes in how employees behaved. Initially,36 communities-of-practice were formad. One communjty-of-practice addressed the problem of poor communications berween engineers. Their goal was to solve a problem that the engineers themselves identified:the tendency of people to focus on their own work and "never talk to each other." The solution to this problem was something called Chalk Talks, which would take place on Friday afternoons, when time was set aside for people to meet and talk about the projects they were working on that week. Another community-of-practice tackled the issue of work/life quality.
