The effects of NaCl and GVL on cell growth of C. acetobutylicum XY16
The hydrolysate with high sugar concentration was obtained by using GVL/water solution,
but high level of NaCl and GVL were left in the hydrolysate during phase separation process.
Thus, the effects of NaCl and GVL at different concentrations on the cell growth of C. acetobutylicum XY16 were investigated (Fig. 2).
P2 medium with 60 g/L glucose was used for cell culture.
Considering that 40–60 g/L of sugar is needed for batch ABE fermentation [12],
NaCl and GVL were added at the level of 20–25 g/L and 2–5 g/L, respectively.
When exposed to high concentration of NaCl,
cells would suffer from high osmotic pressure and consequently cell growth would be inhibited [6].
The cells of C. acetobutylicum XY16 slowly grew to the maximum OD600 of 3.65 and 2.59 under the osmotic condition of 20 g/L and 25 g/L NaCl, respectively.
