Although the intercropping combinations of Wpwo and Wpwocappear to have more peanut pods per plant, no statisticallysignificant differences were detected for peanut parameters(Fig. 3). There was a 31% reduction in watermelon Brix in 2012 inthe Wpwoc treatment combination compared to its correspondingmonoculture (Fig. 4). However, it is unknown whether thisreduction was caused by competition from okra (although noreductions were evident in other intercropping combinationswith okra) or due to the downy mildew infestation. No otherdifferences were detected in watermelon quality for both years.However, watermelon fresh fruit weight was lower and fleshfirmness was higher in 2012 as compared to 2011. Okra fresh podweight was statistically different in 2011 (P<0.001), with themonoculture having the lowest fresh pod weight and the Wpwocintercropping combination the highest (Fig. 5). This represents a15% decrease in pod fresh weight in monoculture as compared toWpwoc.
