The objective of this study was to assess the dietary intake of key nutrients in a large, contemporary sample of subjects
with thalassemia, who were identified through the Thalassemia Clinical Research Network, and to compare their intake to
US Dietary Reference Intakes. The specific hypotheses for this study were as follows: subjects with thalassemia have an inadequate dietary intake of key nutrients in comparison with age- and sex-specific recommendations; dietary intake of vitamin D is insufficient to maintain adequate vitamin D status; and dietary intake of iron is unrelated to total body iron
stores, particularly in chronically transfused subjects.
