This sectioncoverstheexperimentalworkdoneduringthis
study.Resultsofexperimentslikestabilityinvestigation,interfacial
and adsorptionmeasurementsarediscussed.
3.1.Nanoparticlesuspensionstability
In thissection,wearemainlyconcernedwithdispersionsof
colloidal solidparticlesinliquids.Themainpointisthatifthe
dispersion remainsindispersedstateundertheexperiment
conditions or flocculation andcoagulationtakeplace.Twocases
of aqueoussuspensionstabilitywithoutanyadditivesandwith
surfactant additionwereconsidered.
While theaqueoussuspensionsofAEROSIL300hydrophilic
nanoparticles remainedstableformorethanonemonthmainly
due totheirtinysize,slightlyhydrophobicAEROSILR816nano-
particle suspensionstendedtoagglomerateafterashortperiodof
twotothreedays.Thisphenomenonmayberelatedtothe
hydrophobicchainattachedtonanoparticlesurfacewhichmakes
the aqueousbulksolutiontobeanunfavorableenvironmentfor
individualparticles.Asaresult,nanoparticlesbegintoagglomer-
ate and finally settleduetogravitationalforces.
Addition ofSDSanionicsurfactanttonanoparticlesuspensions
extendedthestabilityperiodforbothnanoparticlesespeciallyin
the caseofAEROSILR816andnoagglomerationoccurred. Fig. 2
representsbothagglomeratedandstabilizedsuspensionsfor
slightly hydrophobicR816nanoparticles.Flocculatedandagglom-
eratedparticleswereobservedintheabsenceofsurfactant(left).
By theinclusionofsurfactantmolecules(right),however,the
suspension remainedinstableconditionforalongperiodand
no coagulationwasobserved(Thesuspensionwascompletely
clear). Thestabilityimprovementofnanoparticlesuspensionsmay
be interpretedthroughtheadsorptionofSDSonnanoparticle
surface, bringingaboutsuperchargedsystembyincreasingthe
effectivechargeofsilicaandconsequentlystabilizethesystem
