Lithostrotion forms a major part
of the Carboniferous 'coral-calcarenite' fossil assemblages, such as those commonly found in
limestones of northern England dated to Asbian (Visean) times, 340 million years ago. These
fossilized sea-bed communities of corals, brachiopods and brittlestars were an important
haven for marine life in the Mid-Palaeozoic seas.
