Twenty-two watermelon accessions were evaluated for their
response to two nematodes M. javanica and M. incognita. Watermelon
susceptibility to the two nematodes in the two experiments
was relatively low (Tables 4 and 5). The highest galling index
recorded was 2.1 for PI 273481 inoculated with M. incognita. Galling
index for the tested melon and cucumber ranged from 2.4 to 3.5 for
the two nematode species in both experiments (Tables 4 and 5).
Suppression of egg production can be interpreted as complete
resistance. Egg production in the galls of selected watermelon
accessions exhibiting low galling index was evaluated (Fig. 1) and
compared to egg production in the susceptible cucumber and
melon controls. No M. incognita egg production was found in PI
457916; this accession and PI 482318 were completely resistant to
M. javanica.
