When applying three passes of RO, the value of total VRF is a bit
lower than in the other treatments, but the decontamination factor is
higher than 3500. This value of DF is even higher than the highest values
found in the literature in the treatment of other radioactive wastes by
RO [12]. Average activity removal in the three RO passes is 99.9%, a
very similar value to the one found in literature in analogous treatments
applied to radioactive wastes [18]. In this case, permeate activity is reduced
to the level of the first experiment. This permeate activity, after
three RO passes, would require only 120 days of storage for discharge
(if authorized and after checking the lack of infectious compounds).
This means a total storage time after waste generation of only
5 months. This is a clear advantage from the point of view of hospital
storage capacity when comparing to other two alternatives.
