Laser photocoagulation surgery in
both trials was beneficial in reducing the risk of further visual loss, but generally
not beneficial in reversing already
diminished acuity. Recombinant monoclonal
neutralizing antibody to VEGF improves
vision and reduces the need for
laser photocoagulation in patients with
macular edema (54). Other emerging
therapies for retinopathy include sustained
intravitreal delivery of fluocinolone
(55) and the possibility of
prevention with fenofibrate (56,57).
