Current affairs are used as a way into the domain, and these have included issues such as Iraq, the Holocaust, the BNP [the far-right British National Party], and multiculturalism which works well in the Midlands’ diverse community context…Within the subject area of citizenship, a key issue is that of ‘identity’, and in particular what it might mean to be ‘British’… the main problem here is the media portrayal of what ‘Britishness’ is, a stereotypical view which is often exclusionary of, particularly, citizens of the Islamic faith.
