1. Arcada Further Education.
Master’s Degree Programme in Media Management
The Master’s programme in Media Management at Arcada presents you with real-life cases and projects useful to a manager in any media-related company. In Arcada's modern premises you can apply your knowledge hands-on.
Strategies and innovations in media are intimately linked to research and development. An important part of the curriculum is to plan and accomplish your own development project in the form of a Master’s Thesis. In the process you will learn to identify problems, ask relevant questions, and report and communicate your findings in a way that meets the academic standards and is relevant to the industry. The aim of the thesis project is to advance the operations or management methods of a creative company or content industrial actors in general. In other words, your master’s education can be seen as a wise investment for your employer, if you are currently in the business.
Who is the programme for?
The graduate programme in Media Management at Arcada is intended for persons who wish to deepen their knowledge, skills, and competence in order to manage creative companies within the content industries. Eligible candidates have a minimum of three years of work experience in media and art production, design, communications, business administration, or in some other relevant field within the content industries. In addition to this, they have a bachelor’s degree (exam consisting of minimum 180 credits ECTS/three years of full-time studies) in media and communications, arts and culture management, or business management. A bachelor’s degree in media and information technology, art and design, advertising, literature and culture studies, or entertainment law can also provide a suitable study background. A bachelor’s degree in some other field can also be sufficient if the applicant has relevant work experience and knowledge of the content industries.
Future career opportunities
After finishing the programme the student is able to analyse existing knowledge as well as predict market trends and industrial development and apply this knowledge in developing business and content concepts, and business operations. Further, he or she is capable of creating new knowledge for the use of market actors and public authorities operating within the content industries. The programme provides the student with relevant knowledge and skills needed in managing creative companies.
The emergence of various new media has made the concept of media wider than ever before. At the same time, traditional media – books, newspapers, radio, film, television – remain vivid. There are an increasing number of small-scale and entrepreneurial firms entering the market, but the positions of older and bigger media corporations – including public media – remain strong. Graduates in Media Management will be able to work with a wide variety of managerial tasks in an expanding media industry.
Programme outline
The scope of the programme is 60 credits ECTS. The programme is run as part-time studies, which allows students to study alongside work.
The courses are taught entirely in English and they are linked to the RDI (research, development and innovation) activities at Arcada. The courses comprise scheduled lectures, workshops, seminars, RDI exercises, and independent studies. Scheduled tuition takes place mainly after 4 p.m. on weekdays and between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays. About 25 % of the programme consists of scheduled tuition in class and in living lab environments. 75 % of the programme is conducted as independent studies.
All students receive an individual study plan. The study plan allows the student to tailor the exam to suit her/his individual needs based on previous study and work experience. For instance, a student with a bachelor’s degree in business administration will have the possibility to replace business courses with studies in media production.
Programme structure
The programme has two modules of 30 ECTS. The first module gives you six courses (á 5 ECTS) in Media Management. The second module is focussed on your individual thesis work. This module also includes research seminars and personal tuition from our thesis supervisors. It takes one year of half-time studies to complete each module. If you are able to study full-time you can complete the whole programme in one or one and a half years.
Module 1: Courses in Media Management (30 ECTS)
This module examines media industries and the changing media landscape with the intent to provide students with cutting edge knowledge and strategic understanding of the development trends of media production and consumption. The students explore the distinctive characteristics of the media and content industries from economic, technological and cultural points of view.
This module's topics include:
Management and Leadership
Media Economics
Media Innovations
Digital Mediascape
Research in Media Management
Academic Reading and Writing
Research Methodology
Module 2: Master's Thesis (30 ECTS)
The Master’s thesis is a research report on a development project for a client. This client can be the student’s employer, the student’s own company or some other organization in the media industry with whom the student can collaborate. We encourage the students to start planning the thesis at the earliest stage as possible, and applicants are asked to present an idea for their thesis when they apply for the programme. Throughout the programme, students are assisted in finding and developing suitable projects. It is essential that the student finds a thesis topic in which he or she has a strong interest.
Module 2 includes thesis seminars where the student is provided with guidance related to scientific writing, idea development and research methodology. The length of the thesis should correspond to regular research papers published in academic journals on media research. In other words, the length of the thesis can be between 5 000 and 10 000 words.
The aim is to publish the thesis as an academic article. The thesis includes an introduction, a theoretical part with a description of research methodology, a presentation of the empirical evidence and research results, as well as concluding remarks with a discussion of the implications of the findings for media management. The students are guided in reading and writing research papers also in Module 1.
