The big question is whether it is possible for an expansion of biofuel production to create less, or if possible no, pressure on land. The question challenges plant and biotechnology researchers to put efforts into (1) improving biofuel productivity (i.e. output volume per unit area of land) by improving crop yield and crop quality in terms of fermentable content, and (2) making it commercially feasible to produce biofuels from feedstocks other than food crops.
