Every child in our society will spend many waking hours with other children. Age-mates will share the learning environment of the school and will be the major source of play companions and long term friends. Learning to "get along" with such people is an important developmental hurdle for children. Al though the antecedents of peer relations can be traced back to the earliest social interactions with parents and other caregivers, the task of adjusting to the peer group begins in earnest during the preschool years.
