Once the energy has been effectively isolated from the machine or equipment, the authorized
employee(s) shall identify the appropriate control measures (locks/tags) to prevent the accidental or
inadvertent energization of the machine or equipment. The appropriate control measure will depend
on the degree of exposure to the hazard and the risk of injury. As a general rule, a lock and tag
should be used in combination whenever feasible. The use of tags alone shall be limited to those
instances where the use of locks is not feasible. Additionally, if it is not feasible to affix the tag
directly on the energy isolating device, the tag shall be located as close as possible.
