Lesson ADT 88
Task: Use spray deodorant.
Prerequisites: ADT 1, ADT 3, SEN 13, COG 11
Concept: This skill is similar to the previous task of using roll-on deodorant (ADT 87) but requires more fine-motor skills (note the additional prerequisite SEN 13). In addition, the safety factors are greater due to the potential for inadvertently spraying into the eyes or others' faces. The spray nozzle tip can cause problems, and some adaptive devices, such as gluing a 1-inch-square piece of plastic to the top of the spray button, to make this easier may need to be created. The dominant hand needs to be assessed, which can be done by observation to see which hand is preferred.
Behavioral Objective: The student will apply spray deodorant to his or her under-arms to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Spray deodorant, paper, and an air freshener-type spray of similar size.
Task Analysis:
1. Physically guide the student through the process of actually spraying an air freshener. If problems occur, glue a small piece of plastic to the nozzle end so that less fine-motor skill is needed. Make sure that the spray is directed away from the face.
2. Draw a target on a piece of paper, place it on a table, and physically guide the student to use the dominant hand to direct the spray to the identified place.
3. Tape the target to the stomach area, to continue visual cue abilities, and guide the student to hit the target using both the dominant and nondominant hands.
4. Remove necessary clothing, but maintain privacy issues, and modify Step 3 to using the underarms and replacing the air freshener with deodorant.
5. Reduce all prompting to step-by-step verbal commands.
6. Reduce all prompting to a total-task verbal request: "(Name), please use this deodorant."
