Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a form of chronic
lung disease (CLD) that is seen in preterm infants who
had respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and required respiratory
support in the first few days of life. In addition
to premature birth, risk factors include the need for supplemental
oxygen and ventilator support. Factors such as
intrauterine growth restriction, infection (acquired either
in utero or postnatally), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA),
and genetic predisposition may contribute to the pathogenesis
of this disorder. For nurses who work in the NICU
as well as those who are involved in the delivery, resuscitation,
and stabilization of preterm infants, understanding
the disease process, treatment, and outcomes will allow
patient care to be based on a strong scientific foundation
