An animal cell, centre, appears with carbon nanofibres in this electron microscope photo. The nanofibres, measuring one 200 billionth of a metre in diameter, are made of string of atoms. The cell, a mouse macrophage, is sent to the carbon nanofibres by the animal to expel the foreign matter from its system. Relatively little is known about the potential health and environmental effects of the tiny carbon particles.
