It came and it was delicious, I got started straight away, the dressing was amazing and the salad so fresh. But then the chilli started to hit me, it was burning more and more, until I thought a hole was going to sizzle right through my tongue.

The real problem was that I was enjoying it so much that I didn’t stop. So, by three-quarters of the way through my salad I just did not know what to do. I chugged my beer, stuffed ice cubes in my mouth, ate something else, none of it helped.

What a terrible punishment that something so tasty could also make me so miserable, so be warned, if they ask if you like a salad spicy, just say NO.

If you want to give this fiery dish a try, or maybe be a bit smarter than me and order it not spicy head to Cheong Mon beach on the north-eastern tip of Koh Samui. For the life of me I cannot remember the name of the place, but it is down the far right hand end and not only serves this tongue destroyer, but other delicious dishes and ice-cold beer for a really reasonable beach price.

You can also get a massage from them on the beach so it’s a lovely spot to spend the day!
