Intervention

Instruction in activation of the transverse abdominus initially in
supine was progressed to activation in stance and isometric
gluteal contraction with the goal of increased core stability. When
optimal positioning in neutral standing could be performed
without verbal cues, instruction in weight shifting activities and
one leg standing with cues to maintain a level pelvis and level
shoulders, avoiding trunk lean, began. The first goal of the
intervention program was to teach a proper movement pattern
during double leg squatting, step-ups and step-down activities.
The evaluation video was reviewed with the patient. Performance
of these movements in front of a mirror allowed visual feedback.
Continuous and critical technical feedback was provided to ensure
the patient maintained optimal mechanics during the functional
activities. Instruction provided included verbal cueing to keep her
knees positioned over her lateral toes during the functional tasks.
