The proposed methodology was applied to identify potential ecological corridors in the Piedmont region situated in the North–West of Italy (Fig. 3) which covers an area of 25,402 km2. The territory of the region is divided in three areas: the mountain area, which surrounds the region on three sides and occupies the most part of the region (43.3%), the hilly area (30.3%) and finally the plain area (26.4%) situated in the central part of the region which corresponds to the hydrographic catchment of the Po river and its many tributaries.
