Initial Ideas. From the outset, Elly claimed no detailed knowledge of the Sun’s
path. She had not considered what might be seen from Manchester, or anywhere else at
the equinoxes, and was generally unaware of annual changes in the Sun’s path. Yet she
did know that the Sun would transcribe an arc in the “lower” sky, rising due east and
setting due west and, although her initial drawings indicate differently, she stated it would
be overhead at noon.
