Competence in basic psychomotor skills is essential to ensure safe, effective nursing care. Within the current practice of nursing education, students have limited opportunities to practice psychomotor skills in actual patient care areas (Sears, Goldsworthy, & Goodman, 2010), meaning that more skills are learned and mastered in simulated learning laboratory settings. Simulation is a rapidly evolving, active teaching strategy that offers a method to practice skills in a safe environment prior to working with patients in actual clinical settings, thus minimizing patient harm caused by inexperienced students.
