Routine antibiotic therapy does not delay delivery or improve neonatal outcome in the setting of preterm labor with intact membranes.Antibiotics increase bacterial resistance when they are given without specific aim toward particular organisms. In addition, broad spectrum antibiotics promote resistant newborn sepsis. Routine antibiotic administration
for the treatment of preterm labor with intact membranes is not currently recommended. However, antibiotics have been associated with prolonging pregnancy in women with preterm labor with PROM and are therefore recommended for this group of women.
