Risk Factors
Risk factors for preeclampsia include nulliparity (i.e., having never borne a child) or primiparity (i.e., having borne one child),
African American ethnicity, presence of preexisting disease (e.g., chronic HTN, renal disease, diabetes mellitus [DM], or
systemic lupus erythematosus), multifetal pregnancy, family history of pregnancy-related HTN, previous preeclampsia, and
obesity. Women at the extremes of childbearing age (e.g., < 18 or > 35 years) are at increased risk of developing preeclampsia.
General risk factors for HTN in pregnancy include obesity, alcohol abuse, and family history. Gestational weight gain in early
pregnancy appears to be associated with increased risk of HTN in pregnancy.
