Grinding and combined grinding and sonication yielded the total hydrocarbon ranging from 20-50% in all cultivated conditions (Figure 2 and 4). However, sonication treatment during the hexane extraction yielded the total hydrocarbon (10-40% of dry weight) less than the other two methods (Figure 3). The results suggested that the sole sonication for releasing hydrocarbon from cell was less effective than the combined grinding-sonication; and manual grinding. The biomass cultivated at room temperature and in medium type II appeared to yield the highest total hydrocarbon. The hydrocarbon yields in the current study were similar to the results reported by Sawayama et al. (1992) [10] and Kojima and Zhang (1999) [II].
