At the beginning of treatment, there were no significant differences in mean body weight among the four groups (Table 1). By week 7 (after which the nicotine-patch dose was decreased from 21 to 14 mg per day), subjects in the placebo group had gained an average of 2.1 kg, as compared with a gain of 1.6 kg in the nicotine-patch group, 1.7 kg in the bupropion group, and 1.1 kg in the combined-treatment group.
