The first piece of media I wanted to analyze through a gender stereotype-lens was film. I would consider myself well accustomed to the world of film – I can often recite quotes, give a detailed plot over view, and I watch movie trailers for fun. When thinking about a movie that had gender stereotypes I immediately thought of Legally Blonde. Although this is one of my favorite films because I do find it empowering, the more I thought about it the more I found that it wasn’t empowering because it’s a comedy. The film focuses on Elle Woods, a stereotypical blonde, material sorority girl who looks like a real life Barbie. After her boyfriend, Warner breaks up with her to find someone more “serious” for Harvard. Elle wants to win Warner back, so she gets into Harvard and succeeds, showing that although she’s blonde, she’s smart and a better lawyer than most people in the class.
