A. baumannii often colonizes the respiratory tract of
patients hospitalized in the ICU and consequently this organism
is an important aetiological agent of ventilator-associated
pneumonia.21 Due to possible colonization of wounds and
vascular catheters, these organisms also play a role in BSIs,
UTIs and soft tissue infections.22e24 The attributable mortality
caused by A. baumannii infections in the ICUs ranges between
7.8% and 23%, which is similar to what we observed in our
study.
