This game of Calcio Storico – or ‘historic football’ – was founded in 16th century Italy, probably in Florence’s Piazza Santa Croce, and although its popularity faded over time, the 1930s saw a revived interest and now three games are played each year in Florence. Matches last 50 minutes, and each team has 27 members who score points by getting the ball into the other team’s goal. An aggressive sport, it permits bodily contact, including punching and choking, although it is forbidden to kick an opponent in the head. Two semi finals are held between each quarter of the city of Florence, on the June 14 and 15 this year, and the final is held on June 24, at the Festa di San Giovanni.Don't forget your purple attire, the official color of the Florence soccer team, Fiorentina.
