The PCBs of cellular phones contain relatively high concentrations
of heavy metals, while in PH and LCD monitors concentration
levels were much lower but not insignificant. Taking into consideration
the RoHS Directive, results revealed that handsets manufactured
after 2002 do not contain Hg and Cd that exceed the
permissible concentration limits, indicating mobile phone vendor’s
implementation to the restrictions prior the date of their enforcement.
On the other hand, Pb and Cr concentration levels exceeded
the limit of 1000 ppm in handset’s PCB manufactured at several
samples. Nevertheless, cellular phones can pose potential threat to
the environment and to human health and therefore should be disposed
according to an environmentally sound management scheme.
