As an intellectual Matthew Arnold was seriously involved with the leading issues of his time- the economic prosperity of the Victorian England, he clearly saw, was leading to such contractions that would split the nation. He kept an eye on the public debates that were going on in newspapers, journals, academic circles and even in the house study them, through lectures and essays he tried to give a new constructive direction to these debates. CULTURE AND ANARCHY, a correlation of the six lectures that he delivered in Oxford University, is an important contribution of Arnold towards the meaning of culture. Though he feruses on the British culture, the implications of his lectures have lessons for all men and all nation.
