An Overview of the NUD*IST Approach
The intention here is to try to give a general feel for what NUD*IST does and how you use it. Later sections of the chapter cover its use in the different contexts of the analysis of data from the three main flexible designs covered in this text (grounded theory studies, ethnographic studies and case studies). The versions current at the time of writing are NUD*IST 5 for Windows, and NUD*IST 4 for Macintosh. The program includes sample data sets and tutorials, and has a good manual, all of which you should to have the help and support of someone with experience in its use, and attendance at a practical workshop will prove useful. A new package from the same stable as NUD*IST, known as NVivo, is available. It follows the same basic approach but has several clear advantages over NUD*IST (Richards, 1999; Gibbs, 2001).
