European organic farm-ers encounter difficulties to find varieties that suit their needs, because most crop breeding efforts are oriented towards develop-ing varieties for conventional cropping systems that use syntheticinputs to manage the crop growing environment. Varieties selectedfor the conventional market are not always the best suited for use inorganic cropping, due to the differences in management practicesbetween both production chains. The purpose of this paper is to identify options to transformthe breeding of varieties in such a way that breeders are able toaddress the needs of the organic sector.
