An abstract is defined as an abbreviated, accurate representation of an
original document without added interpretation or criticism. It condenses the primary
or original scientific literature to one tenth or one twentieth of the number of words; for
instance, a 2000-word article is typically condensed to about 100 to 200 words. It is this
reduction in size that is the essence of the abstract. However, no definition is able to capture
the nuance of the term or to provide a good picture of an abstract. To understand better
the broad meaning of the term, students find it necessary to consider the various purposes
that the abstract serves. Basically, the abstract is designed to facilitate communication and
the transfer of knowledge, because it enables the users to cover a large amount of
information quickly and easily.
