Objective:
To appreciate the function and operation of a layer 2 LAN switch.
To understand the limitations of LAN switches and some of the problems than can occur
within network designs that only use switches.
To understand the problems that can arise when LAN switches are connected in such a
manner that data loops are created. To determine how the IEEE Spanning
Tree Protocol is able to operate to resolve such problems and ensure that only one
traffic route is finally configured throughout the whole network.
To appreciate and understand how and when to use a layer 3 switch within a network and in
particular how a layer 3 switch differs from a router.
