The automation of shopfloor information tasks is a relatively relatively recent development in warehousing but materials handling automation is well established. Cranes, forklifts, reach trucks, pallet trucks, AGVs and conveyors are widely used to minimize human effort and intervention (the term MHE – materials handling equipment – is sometimes used to describe the various types of equipment for handling inventory). As in automated information tasks, automated materials handling improves and standardizes warehouse performance by minimizing human intervention. A further consequence is the optimization of warehouse space. By employing mechanical and automated handling technologies, floor space between storage locations can be minimized and the locations themselves are able to occupy multiple level, as in AGbarr case. AGbarr is 11-storey automated high bay storage system is serviced via automated conveyors and requires no manual intervention other than for maintenance.
