Joseph Baumhauer (French, died 1772),Commode, Joseph Baumhauer, a German-born cabinetmaker working in France, was known simply as Joseph to his French compatriots for the ease of pronouncing his name. Much of Baumhauer’s work was commissioned for dealers who specialized in luxury furniture. He was made a marchand-ébénisteprivilégié du roi, a cabinetmaker and dealer to King Louis XV, around 1749. The ornate commode in TMA’s collection was probably designed as a companion to a nearly identical one in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.
