Zika virus (ZIKV) is a member of the virus family Flaviviridae.[3] Its name comes from the Zika Forest of Uganda, where the virus was first isolated in 1947. [3] It is spread by daytime-active Aedes mosquitoes, such as A. aegypti and A. albopictus.[3] Zika virus is related to yellow fever (YF), West Nile , dengue and Japanese encephalitis viruses, and most closely to Spondweni virus [6, 7] In November of 2015, the Ministry of Health of Brazil published an announcement confirming the relationship between Zika virus and the microcephaly outbreak in the Northeast, suggesting that infected pregnant women might have transmitted the virus to their fetuses.
