To assess changes in beach safety perceptions after the March 11,
2011 Japanese tsunami, another self-completed questionnaire
survey was conducted at Bangkok international airport from
September to October 2011 at the departure gates of flights leaving
for Thai beach destinations, including Samui in the Gulf of Thailand,
and Phuket and Krabi on the Andaman coast. A single stage cluster
sampling was used to randomly selected 10 flights to those destinations.
Inbound tourists who were waiting for departure flights
were invited to participate in the survey. Two graduate research
assistants collected the data and immediately checked for
completeness after the respondents returned their questionnaire.
Then, post-survey interviews with respondents were randomly
conducted to clarify the answers of some questionnaires. Only
respondentswho agreed to further conversation about their answers
were included in the interviews. Likewise, a follow-up interview
with the director of (Thailand) National Disaster Warning Center
(NDWC)was conducted in December 2011 to understand the roles of
government in crisis management in case of a tsunami occurrence.
