DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for ADHD should also be assessed.
Following data gathering, it can be useful to ask the patient and collateral information providers
what they know about the nature, symptoms, and treatment of ADHD. Some are likely to be
well-informed, while many have very fragmentary information and considerable misinformation. The
clinician should give a brief description of each cluster of ADHD symptoms using examples, and ask
how much those symptoms fit or do not fit current functioning. Finally, if the diagnosis is ADHD, with
or without another disorder, treatment options are discussed.
