I could not cry out. A horrible face was looking down at me. A face with cruel grey eyes and big teeth. I could not move. I could not breathe. From far away I heard the sound of a gun. Then I was dropped on the ground and everything went dark.
I was woken by Lord Roxton. He was washing my face with cold water. The two professors stood nearby.
‘Thank God you are all right, Malone!’ said Lord Roxton. ‘We thought you were dead. An Ape-Man had caught you. He dropped you when I shot at him.’
Now we knew that the Ape-People were watching us. We hurried on through the forest. In the late afternoon we reached the lake. The Indians gave a cry of joy and pointed to the water.
We saw a wonderful sight. Many canoes were coming towards us across the lake. In the canoes there were Indians. They were carrying spears and bows and arrows.
The canoes reached the edge of the lake and the Indians got out. They ran towards us. One of them was an old man. He wore clothes made of animal skins and a necklace of large beads. He put his arms round the young Indians.
