Anderson and the landlord are in room 12 when they start to hear hideous, crooning song coming from the room next door. They can see the shadow of a dancing figure reflected on the wall of the building opposite. This is the horrific highpoint of the story, with the description of the voice being impressively creepy. ‘Of words and tune there was no question. It went sailing up to a surprising height, and was carried down to a despairing moan as of a winter wind in a hollow chimney, or an organ whose wind fails suddenly. It was a really horrible sound…’
