Signs and Symptoms/Clinical Presentation
Persons who have EDS and insomnia that persists for a month or more meet the diagnostic criteria for DSPS. Patient complaints of daytime fatigue, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating or completing tasks, and irritability are common. Having a history of evening alertness, bedtime at 2–6 a.m., and wake time between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. when schedule constraints are absent is common. Patients may report an inability to awaken at a “normal” or scheduled time even with an alarm, and DSPS signs and symptoms that often began in childhood or adolescence. Depression is common in persons with DSPS.
