Count Fosco is a one armed highway man who controls others both through the mysterious powers of his mind, and through his social manipulation. He is handsome and charming. He is, actually, literally, the servant of the devil, but since no one knows this, besides for Lady Naive, he is able to execute most of his master plans with t his charm, and also the sympathy he is given when he tells the (false) tale of how he lost his arm while fighting back the brigands that attacked his estate when he was a teenager, and saved the tennants as well as his father- unfortunately, his mother and sister did not make it in his imaginary tale, so he uses this for sympathy too.
His best scenes come from his somewhat humourous conversations with the devil, who often tries to get him to do things that will amuse him for no reason whatsoever. At one point he is instructed to tell lots of lies to people that are unwilling to find out the truth for themselves, but Fosco insists that he can not be a party to this- which results in the devil firing him (kinda literally) and Fosco is redeemed through his love for Lady Naive, and her insistance on bringing him "back to the light
