According to the peace treaty with Italy at the end of World War 2, the disposition of Libya, Italian Somaliland, and Eritrea was to be determined by France, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and the United States. If within one year they could not agree (and this proved to be the case), they were to turn the matter over to the General Assembly for solution. After much study and debate the Assembly, in November 1949, adopted a resolution that provided for additional investigation with regard to Eritrea and for a decision on the final status of the other two territories.
