In the 1990s "modern" became synonymous with "minimal" and "bland". Home decorators tossed out the frills of the '80s, stripped the wallpaper, and banished the floral sofas. Large entertainment centers and computer desks were found in family rooms, and kitchens became a place for gadgets and starkness. Taupe was the color of the decade. It was rolled onto walls and found underfoot in the form of Berber carpet. For a little bit of color, homeowners painted "accent walls" and purchased lots of throw pillows. Furniture was larger than ever. Enormous sectional sofas were extremely popular, and the bigger the master bedroom suite the better.
