Although pathogenic indicators of unsanitary practices such as
E. coli, V. cholera and Salmonella spp were not detected in any of
the fish samples, the presence of A. flavus makes consumption of
the fish hazardous to the health of consumers.
A. flavus is a human
pathogen that produces the carcinogen, aflatoxin (Pitt, 1989),
which has been reported to cause hepatica (cancer of the liver)
and liver cirrhosis in animals and man
