Many au pairs who come to the USA have experience caring for infants. But depending on the type of childcare, not all au pairs have been exposed to the common health conditions that infants experience. In this section we introduce a few of these more common conditions.
Diaper rash
Most babies develop diaper rash at some point during infancy. The first sign of diaper rash is redness or small bumps on baby’s buttocks, genital area, and upper thighs. The best way to prevent and cure diaper rash is to keep the baby’s skin dry and clean, and change the diapers often. If you notice diaper rash, ask the parents how they want it to be treated, and do not use any powder, gel, or cream without the parents’ permission.

Cradle cap
Cradle cap is a crusty rash that occurs on the scalp of newborn babies, generally sometime in the first few months. Cradle cap is also called milk crust. It is not painful, itchy or contagious. The cause is unknown but it can be treated simply. If an infant you are caring for shows signs of cradle cap, let your host parents know. They can decide what to use for treatment.
